"She's Out...Standing In Her Field: Writing Recommendations for Students"
by John Euchler and Chester Stark
"She's Out...Standing In Her Field" is the title of this useful guide to
help busy teachers write clear and concise letters of recommendation as easily as it is to make a salad from a zip-lock bag containing five kinds of pre-washed
lettuce.
Using the sample formats and suggestions, great letters can be written in
little time with proper spacing, headings, inside addresses, salutations, closings, etcetera.
Although written with teachers as the primary target audience, it will
also be useful to business owners, doctors, lawyers, social workers, and students who are asked more and more frequently by colleges to write recommendations for peers.
(All of the authors' profits derived from the sale of this eBook will go to the American Partnership For Eosinophilic Disorders (APFED), a non-profit organization dedicated to the patients and their families coping with eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders.)

(An excerpt from "She's Out...Standing In Her Field: Writing Recommendations For Students")
"Average: Like the folks in Garrison Keillor's Lake Wobegon, we want to
hear that "all the children are above average."
"Average" is a perversion of a statistical term, the "mean." One can not
write about the "mean" of a student.
That having been said, we probably will still fall back to thinking
rubbing mud on a bee sting helps (it doesn't), that there are places
where it is too cold to snow (there aren't) and that we have certain
students requesting letters of recommendation who are "average."
This one's for them. Notice what's played up, and down, here:

Dear Admissions Officer,
I am pleased to write a letter of recommendation for Jenifer Lopes
who has recently applied to your program. I have only been acquainted
with Jenifer 's work since September of 1999 in my Business Mathematics
class. However, in that period, I have observed an intelligent,
self-motivated young woman whose reserved demeanor belies the
perseverance and dedication within..."
